US city to ban unhealthy food from checkout areas

Sep 28, 2020

California (USA), September 28: A city in the western US state of California has decided to ban unhealthy food and beverages from grocery store checkout lanes.
The Berkeley City Council unanimously passed the ordinance last week. It is set to take effect in March.
The ban will apply to stores that are over 2,500 square feet in size and will cover items high in sugar and sodium.
The council says that unhealthy food and beverages should not be placed at eye-level and within reach of children.
Experts say people with diabetes and other conditions may develop severe symptoms when infected with the coronavirus.
